Synopsis:
   $split(<chars> <text>)

Technical:
   This function converts each specified character found in the input text
   to a space.

Practical:
   This function is mostly useful for parsing lines of input that contain
   a particular character as a delimiter.

Returns:
   input text with characters swapped

Examples:
   $split(: a:b:c)            returns "a b c"
   $split(,. a,b.c)           returns "a b c"
